DISCOVERY ACTIVITY

As always, we start with making sure the student understands the meaning of people. For this word we can then check the etymology (e.g. at www.etymonline.com) of people, which will reveal that it is derived from the Latin populous. During the conversation you, or your student/s, can compile the list of words the student suggests might be related to people. Some words that the student might suggest are: popular and population. It is also possible, even probable, that the student will suggest a word that doesn’t fit, like the word popped. This is a very good mistake that leads to a discussion about why it does not fit. For example, the word popped does not fit because, even though it sounds like popular, we have to remember that the words also have to share a meaning.
